Ball Games

So......
We have a game called "baseball"
And we call another game "football"

So......
Why don't we call soccer "soccerball"?
And golf "golfball"?

We have volleyball, but not tennisball.

And we have basketball, but not bowlingball.

What's up with this?!

You're killing me!

The rest of the world calls soccer football (or futbol), so to most that game does fall into the pattern.

I have no explanation for any of the others. I'm guessing there is a story dating back a couple hundred years for both tennis and golf.

Bowling was just called bowling because it can be played with anything that will slide or roll (frozen turkeys for instance work pretty well). Thus calling it bowlingball would not have covered the entire scope of the sport.
